EZ Paperclips

~ This tutorial assumes you are familiar with the tools in PSP ~
It was written on June 07, 2008, using PSP 9, but it can be completed in most versions
Tutorials are only guidelines, it's always fun to experiment with different settings on your own : )
We will be making 3 different clips, silver, distressed silver and bronze.
Tools we will be using:
Text Tool:
Step 1:
Download, Unzip and install the paperclip font.
If you prefer not to install this font, open it by double clicking on it, then minimize it to
your task bar. It will show up as 'paperclip' in PSP's font drop down list.
- Download & Unzip the patterns. Open both in PSP and minimize them.
Step 2:
Create a new file (file > new), 300x300, white background.
Step 3:
Select the Text Tool, or hit 't' to activate it.
Set the tool options as shown below:

Step 4:
Go over to your Materials Palette, set the Foreground/Stroke to null (transparent).
Set the Background/Fill to the 'silverclip' pattern, Angle 0, Scale 200.
Click on your canvas and type the letter 'I' in the Text Entry box, hit OK.
This is what you should have now:

Step 5:
Right click on your paperclip layer and select convert to raster. Name this layer 'Silver'.
Go up to Effects > 3D Effects > Inner Bevel and plug in the below settings:
Bevel #2, 10, 25, 7, -20, 35, White, 135, 35, 60

Duplicate your Silver layer, name the duplicate layer 'Bronze' and hide
it by clicking on the eye next to the layer.
Step 6:
Go back to your 'Silver' layer and add the following drop shadow:
Vertical: 1
Horizontal: 1
Opacity: 100
Blur: 3
Color: Black
Shadow on new layer: Checked
Lower the opacity of the drop shadow layer to 54.
This is what your clip should look like at this point:

Hide your background layer, right click on your 'silver' layer and merge visible.
Rename the layer back to 'Silver' again and click the eye next to it to hide it.
Your silver paperclip is done!
Step 7:
Now we'll make the distressed silver paperclip.
Select your Text Tool again, using the same settings as we did in Step 3.
Change the Background/Fill pattern in your Materials palette to the 'silvermesh' pattern, Angle 0, Scale 200.
Again type the letter 'I', right click on the layer and convert it to raster.
Apply the same Inner Bevel Setting as we did in Step 5.
Repeat Step 6, but rename this layer 'Distressed silver', instead of Silver.
This is how my Distressed silver clip looks:

Step 8:
Now for the bronze paperclip.
Unhide the 'Bronze' layer you created at the end of Step 5.
Go up to Adjust > Color Balance > Manual color correction, use the below settings:

Step 9:
Add the same drop shadow we used in Step 6 and your bronze paperclip is done!
Here is how my bronze clip looks:

That's it, we're done!
